Here at AZ Max, we often get asked whether it’s necessary to see an oral surgeon for wisdom tooth removal. The answer is yes! While your general dentist may be able to remove wisdom teeth, there are several reasons it’s better to see an oral surgeon for this procedure.

In this blog post, we’ll discuss three reasons you should always see a dental surgeon for wisdom tooth removal: experience, training, and sedation options. Keep reading to learn more!

3 Reasons To See an Oral Surgeon for Wisdom Tooth Removal

1. Experience

One of the main reasons you should see a dental surgeon for wisdom tooth removal is experience. Oral surgeons have been removing wisdom teeth for years and have the experience necessary to do the job right. Because they perform this procedure on a regular basis, they’re more likely to be up-to-date on the latest techniques and technologies.

2. Training

Another reason to see a dental surgeon for wisdom tooth removal is training. Oral surgeons complete four years of dental school, followed by an additional four to six years of residency training. This ensures they have the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively remove wisdom teeth.

3. Sedation Options

One last reason to choose an oral surgeon for wisdom tooth removal is sedation options. At our office, we offer several types of sedation to help our patients relax during their procedure. The sedation options we offer include the following:

  • Oral conscious sedation
  • IV conscious sedation
  • Nitrous oxide
  • General anesthesia

Oral Conscious Sedation

With oral conscious sedation, you’ll take a pill before your procedure that will make you drowsy. You’ll be awake during the procedure but will probably not remember much of it afterward.

IV Conscious Sedation

With IV conscious sedation, we’ll give you medication through an IV that will help you relax. Like oral conscious sedation, you’ll be awake during the procedure but may not remember much of it afterward.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” is a safe and effective way to help you relax during your procedure. You’ll be able to breathe on your own and will be awake during the procedure. You will be mildly sedated and likely remember very little of the procedure.

General Anesthesia

With general anesthesia, you’ll be asleep during your procedure. This is typically only recommended for more complex cases or for patients who have a high level of anxiety

Not all dentists are trained in administering IV sedation or nitrous oxide, so if you’re interested in these types of sedation, you’ll need to see an oral surgeon.
