Course Objectives

After completion, course participants can expect to be able to:

  • Explain the fundamentals of pain, including revised definition and impact on patient care in the dental setting
  • Explain the fundamentals of judicious management of pain in the dental setting based on current guidelines, blueprints, and regulations
  • Develop individualized assessments of pain in the dental setting based on patient characteristics, type and severity of pain, non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic options, and rational initiation of opioid analgesics
  • Develop individualized pain management plans in the dental setting, including non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic options such as opioid analgesics
  • Develop individualized therapy goals in the dental setting, including reduction in pain intensity, realistic recovery of meaningful activity, and safe use of opioid analgesics
  • Develop individualized follow up plans in the dental setting, including education related to efficacy, safety, and harm reduction of opioid analgesics

Melinda J. Burnworth

Melinda J. Burnworth

PharmD, FASHP, FAzPA, BCPS graduated from the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Pharmacy. She then completed accredited residencies in Pharmacy Practice (PGY1) and Adult Internal Medicine (PGY2) at Grady Health System in Atlanta, Georgia. Burnworth is a hospital pharmacist and Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Midwestern University College of Pharmacy, Glendale Campus. She is involved with teaching several hospital-based courses and an elective course about rare diseases at the College of Pharmacy. She has special interests in pain management, orphan drug development and orphan diseases, efforts to minimize drug shortages and maximize patient safety, political advocacy, student mentorship, preceptor development, and women in pharmacy leadership. Burnworth is actively involved with the Arizona Pharmacy Association Health-System SIG, previously serving as the Chair of the Health-System Academy.

Most recently, Burnworth served as a core faculty member on the task force designed to “Stop Overdose Deaths in Arizona” via the widespread distribution of over-the-counter naloxone. Furthermore, Burnworth is actively involved with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and National Organization for Rare Disorders. Burnworth demonstrates commitment to the profession of pharmacy, learners, and patients through involvement with academic endeavors, patient-centered care, and professional pharmacy organizations.

Kent C Layton

2nd Year PharmD candidate at MWU, ASHP, AzPa will graduate from Midwestern University College of Pharmacy in May 2026. He recently completed introductory rotations in a community setting with Walgreens Pharmacy and also Patient Care Infusion, LLC, a pharmacy that specializes in compounding medicines for in-home infusions as well as nuclear medicine for hospital administration. Prior to Pharmacy School Layton spent nearly 5 years as a surgical assistant team-lead at AZ Max Surgeons PLC.

His experience in oral surgery has given him a unique perspective on the importance of interprofessional education and collaboration, especially when it comes to post-operative pain management and team care. His elevated aspirations for his career and commitment to excellent patient care as a pharmacist are evidenced by his engagement in leadership and management, service within his community, and interprofessional collaborations.
