Reading time: four minutes
Congratulations! You just had dental implant surgery, you are on your way to a new, restored smile and ability to chew! Surgery is the first step in the implant process. Equally important is the recovery stage! It is during this time that your implant starts to fuse with the bone in a process called osseointegration. What you eat during this time will have a big impact on how well and how fast you heal. Choosing the right foods will help minimize discomfort, reduce swelling, and promote healing. To ensure a smooth recovery and long-term success of your implant, follow these tips from AZ Max Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Why a Soft Food Diet is Important
During the initial days following the dental implant procedure, your mouth will be sensitive, and your risk of infection can be higher if you consume the wrong foods. Eating soft foods can help prevent complications such as implant failure, blood clot dislodgement, or irritation of surgical sites.
Recommended Soft Foods
Here’s a list of options to consider during your recovery:
- Mashed Potatoes
- Smooth soups (creamy or pureed)
- Cooked cereals
- Soft fruits (such as seedless, smooth fruits like bananas or applesauce)
- Soft cheese
- Cottage cheese
- Ice cream and frozen yogurt (no nuts or seeds)
- Sweet potatoes
- Protein drinks
- Cooked vegetables
- Greek yogurt
- Soft poached fish
Foods to Avoid
Steer clear of the following types of food for at least 14 days post-surgery:
- Crunchy foods like chips or crackers
- Sticky foods caramel or taffy
- Chewy foods like bagels or tough meats
- Harder foods like nuts or raw vegetables
- Spicy foods and acidic fruits such as citrus fruits
What To Expect During Recovery
On the day of surgery, eat liquid food as soon as the numbing wears off. A protein drink is a great option because it’s easy to swallow and has essential nutrients. Have at least 1/2 cup of liquid and then take your pain medication. Do not take pain medications on an empty stomach!
As the day goes on, you can start to eat soft foods. Don’t eat anything too hot or too cold until your numbing medication has totally worn off and you can properly appreciate temperatures.
Every day thereafter, you should notice improvement. In 2–3 days the pain should begin to improve, and by day five you will be feeling more yourself again.
Tips for a Successful Recovery
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
- Include a variety of nutritious foods to ensure you’re meeting your dietary requirements during the recovery period.
- Avoid using straws as suction can dislodge blood clots that aid in healing.
- Keep your head elevated while sleeping to reduce swelling.
- Do not smoke or use tobacco products as they can hinder the healing process.
- Continue taking any prescribed antibiotics until finished, even if you feel better.
- Rinse with warm salt water after meals to keep your mouth clean and promote healing.
Long-Term Dietary Habits for Dental Implant Success
After your recovery period, it’s important to continue making healthy dietary choices for the long-term success of your dental implant. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Avoid hard or sticky foods that can put pressure on your implant and increase the risk of damage.
- Consume a balanced diet with plenty of calcium and vitamin D to promote bone health.
- Limit sugary foods and drinks as they can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
- Continue regular dental check-ups and cleanings to ensure the health of your implant and surrounding teeth.
