Reading time: three minutes
Microneedling and Botox are two of the most requested cosmetic treatments for improving skin quality and softening wrinkles. While each treatment works differently, many patients combine them as part of a broader skin rejuvenation plan. The key is knowing how they work together and when each treatment should be scheduled.

Why Microneedling and Botox Are Often Combined
These treatments target different causes of facial aging. When used together, they address both skin quality and muscle movement.
Microneedling Improves Skin Structure
Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries that stimulate collagen production.
Benefits include:
- Smoother skin texture
- Reduction in acne scars
- Improved skin tone
- Reduction in fine lines
- Increased collagen and elastin production
Botox Relaxes Wrinkle-Causing Muscles
Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A. It temporarily blocks the nerve signals that tell certain facial muscles to contract. When these muscles relax, the repeated skin folding that creates expression lines is reduced, which helps the skin appear smoother.
Common treatment areas include:
- Forehead lines
- Crow’s feet
- Frown lines
- Glabellar lines (between the eyebrows)
This helps soften fine lines and wrinkles caused by repeated facial movements. The effects are temporary and require ongoing treatments to maintain results. Once muscle movement returns, expression lines can gradually reappear.
How These Treatments Complement Each Other
Microneedling and Botox address different causes of facial aging. Microneedling stimulates collagen production, which improves skin texture and helps reduce fine lines.
Botox works at the muscle level. By relaxing the facial muscles that repeatedly crease the skin, it reduces the movement that contributes to expression lines.
When used together, microneedling improves the quality of the skin and promotes natural collagen production, while Botox reduces the muscle activity that creates wrinkles. The result is smooth, plump skin with fewer visible.
How These Treatments Are Typically Scheduled
When microneedling and Botox are part of the same treatment plan, microneedling is usually performed first. The skin needs time to recover before Botox injections are placed.
Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries that stimulate the skin’s natural production of collagen. Because collagen remodeling takes time, the treatment is typically performed as a series of sessions spaced about four weeks apart.
Most providers recommend waiting about 1 to 2 weeks after microneedling before receiving Botox. This allows the skin barrier to recover before injections are placed.
A typical treatment protocol may look like this:
- Microneedling treatment
- Botox 1 to 2 weeks later
- Additional microneedling sessions every 4 weeks as recommended
- Botox maintenance every 3 to 4 months
Dr. Boyse will adjust the schedule based on your skin condition, treatment depth, and overall goals.

FAQs
Most providers do not perform Botox injections immediately after microneedling. The skin needs time to recover before injections are placed.
Microneedling improves skin texture by stimulating collagen production, while Botox temporarily relaxes facial muscles. Because they work in different ways, microneedling does not extend the effects of Botox.
